Four Ways to Keep Your Dog Comfy When Hosting Another Pup
This weekend, we've been hosting Evan's sister's dog, Ruby, an adorable chunky yellow lab with infinite energy that absolutely adores Koa. Having Ruby over has been a ton of fun for us and for Koa, but when hosting another dog, it's always important to make sure your own dog is at ease, too. Here are a few strategies to make the visit safe and comfortable:
1. Introduce the dogs outside the home.
It's best to introduce new dogs in a "neutral" zone, like at the dog park, or on a nice walk, so they can get to know each other before bringing them into your dog's space.
2. Make sure that each dog gets some personal space.
Koa and Ruby are both crate trained, and we had Amy drop off Ruby's crate, so if the dogs need to wind down a little, or need a break from each other, they each have a safe individual space to do so. Because Ruby has non-stop playing energy, Koa has sought out her crate a few times, to get away from the rumpus and take a peaceful nap. Even if you don't have crates, make sure to give the dogs some time in separate rooms to catch their breath and take a rest.
3. Manage food and particularly coveted objects.
Dogs do not always share well! If your dog has a favorite toy that she may try to resource guard, simply remove that toy from reach, and give the dogs toys that are less likely to upset anyone. Feeding separately is also the safest bet, and make sure you know each dog's temperament well before distributing treats.
4. Take them on outings!
Even though your dog and the visiting pup are likely having a great time wrestling in the yard (these guys certainly are) it's nice to take them out for a hike, walk, bike ride, or trip to the dog park, to give them a change of pace from being each others' sole entertainment. It will help build their friendship to have fun shared experiences while getting a new environment, new smells, and new scenery!
