No Bake Pup Cakes!
I can't believe my little Koey pup is two years old! Last year I baked her a cake made of shredded apples and carrots, beef broth, flour and eggs, with a honey sweetened cream cheese frosting. Perhaps a little over the top, but after all of that she really only ate a slice of it and we didn't have a certain starving street dog to gobble up the rest, so this year I wanted to do something different. But also, something easier. So here's my super simple no-bake pup cake recipe:You will need:
1 large dog food roll (I used the Natural Balance beef flavor. You don't need to get one this huge, but I chop these up and use them as treats at daycare, so I went big!)
1 can of pumpkin puree
1 can of Kong easy treat (I used the liver flavor.)
First open your food roll, cut off the rounded end (and put it aside or sneak it to your pups as a pre-cake snack!) Then, slice the roll into rounds thick enough not to crumble, but consistently thin so you can stack them. I used 4 slices per pup cake, so 12 all together.
Next, spread a thin layer of pumpkin puree over one slice. You could probably use wet food or whipped cream cheese as a substitute, but pumpkin is a great choice because it's good for your dogs' digestion! Stack another on top and repeat until you have four layers.
Spread a little more puree over the top and smooth it over the sides. Repeat with as many cakes as needed.
Finally, use the easy treat can as frosting! This squeezable treat is definitely doggy junk food, but hey, you only get to celebrate your dog's birthday once a year!
